Tourist information - Places of Interest - Heroes` Square
The most beautiful square in Budapest, where you'll find the Museum of Fine Arts, the Palace of Art and the Millenary Monument.
It's the perfect place to go if you want to see an exhibition or take a walk in the sprawling City Park nearby. It's one of Budapest's most popular spots. It is also a station of the yellow M1 (Millennium Underground) line of the Budapest Metro.
The Millenary Monument was erected in 1896 to celebrate the 1000th anniversary of the arrival in the Danube Plain of the Hungarian invaders from Central Asia. On the 36-metre pillar, exactly on the axis of Andrássy út, stands the Archangel Gabriel, who, according to legend, appeared in a dream to King Stephen, founder of the Hungarian state, and offered him the crown. The figures around the pedestal are the legendary 'Seven Chieftains' who led their tribes on the conquest of present-day Hungary.
